Migration and Religion has no connect

Migration and Religion has no connect

Worldwide people have been migrating from one country to another. Every country has migration policy and one can officially apply and get citizenship in another country.
The other path is to illegally enter the country of choice and seek asylum in such country.

The purpose for which people migrate is for sole purpose of earning better livelihood. We have not come across situations in which people have migrated for purpose of religion. If that would have been the case then Vatican would have been full with Christian  migrants , Mecca would have been full with Muslim migrants, Kartarpur would have been full with Sikh migrants and at Banaras people would have been standing  on each other’s shoulder.

If we observe history the migration has been very old phenomenon which is going on for years together.

If we take India as example then

a) Aryans migrated to India and settled here. Original population of Dravidians accommodated them and today there are completely intermingled with each other.

b) People who were skilled in rubber plantation migrated to Malaysia.

c) Sri Lanka and India had ties since mythological era. Many tamilians migrated to Ceylon which was name earlier.

d) Iranians migrated from Iran and opened many business establishments in India.

e) Parsis (Zoroastrians) came from Iran and made India their home. As promised they mixed with local population the way sugar mixes with Milk. They adopted local language and local customs.

f) Large population of Indian skilled people migrated to Canada, Australia, and New Zealand as these countries wanted skilled manpower.
This migration still continues.

g) Many Indian students opt to study in Europe and then opt to find work there and settle.

h) Indo - US is another big story of migration. There is large Indian population which went there for studies and later on progressed up to acquiring green card and subsequently citizenship.

i) Construction boom and Oil exploration in Gulf has seen many Indian Engineers and Workmen making these countries as their home.

J) Africa has witnessed Businessmen Indian making it their base.

k) Countries like Russia, China, and Japan have seen Indian students staying there for professional courses. However they need to return after completing their course.

l) People from India's bordering countries have been crossing over border only in search of livelihood.

As can be seen there is outward and as well inward movement of people in India. Today India is only country wherein people of Indian origin are seen in 70++ countries. They are settled their for generations. In fact there is rough estimate that out of 6 persons in the world 1 is Indian.

India with its large population is unable to offer good opportunity to its citizens. When it comes to Education in spite of many Institutions the admission to courses of choice are difficult. The entry point marks requirement is also very very high.

Government jobs available are limited and number of applications are many.
In one recent case when Maharashtra Police wanted to recruit and fill positions the response received was 250 times. This means for each position 250 candidates applied. Though minimum qualification was Higher Secondary grade they received applications from many graduates, post graduates and even Engineers. Same was case for filling up vacancy of "sweeper" in local Municipal Corporation.

The job opportunities in Private Sector have become NIL due to slow down in Economy and jobs for fresh graduates are not available. Only savior is IT sector which has managed to keep our educated youths occupied. But then business is largely dependent on overseas customers.

Even those who want to opt for business the opportunities are limited and competition is very severe.

In such scenario Indian Citizen are opting to migrate for Education, Jobs and Business.

Middle East countries have provided many employment opportunities to Indian engineers & workforce. This has helped many Indian families and also remittance of foreign exchange.

The safety of Indian Workforce working abroad needs to be ensured by Indian Government. In this case I would like to place on record appreciation for late Sushma Swaraj who was India's foreign minister and took care of every Indian abroad who was in distress and successfully pulled them out of such situations.

One additional reason for migration all over the world is excesses in their parent country. Rohingyas in Myanmar were subjected to excesses and they had to flee the place. In Syria there were excesses on Kurdish people and even use of chemical weapon was done.

In such situation neighboring country can opt to have sympathizer view and provide them asylum since they are in minority in their parent country. However religion cannot be deciding factor in such case. Those who moved and left their country even when they are part of majority religion have done so for some other reason like earning livelihood.

Before granting asylum to any refugee, it is necessary to assess one's own resources.

#whether we will be in position to provide food, shelter and clothing to this incoming population?

#whether they will be able to earn their livelihood when many of current citizens are unable to do so?

#whether it would create any disturbance is existing social fabric of that area?

In fact in India itself many citizens are trying to migrate by official and unofficial path. One recent case when 30 migrants from Punjab tried to enter USA through Mexico. They were deported back by US Government.

We need to view situation in totality and take call of granting citizenship on the basis of religion alone. There are ways in which minorities in other countries to be protected by taking up with respective Governments and Human rights Commission. One can also provide direct help the way Israel did for victims of Chabad House at Nariman Point during terrorist attack.

One fact is very clear that religion is not criteria for deciding migration to any country.

  1. Well reasoned. Also the nation as a construct is a modern one in its current form with its well defined borders and the concept of citizenship. Mostly this happened post WW II when the old order was abolished. The current Indian govt is going down a dangerous path undoubtedly
