How safe are our girls ? What needs to be done.
How safe are our girls ? What needs to be done.
Nirbhaya incidence had shook the entire country. The girl who boarded private bus alongwith her friend was brutally raped in moving bus and also physically harmed. This happened in India's capital New Delhi and incidence happened in moving bus and no one realized inspite of being highly populated city.
There was lot of uproar after this incidence and we expected that such incidences shall not occur again. We were proved wrong and rapes happened in different cities from North to South and East to West.
Why such things are happening and how to stop this non-sense is the topic of discussion.
The incidences of rape are increasing today due to following,
1) Easy access to Internet. Today free WiFi is available at many public places including railway station etc. Many mobile companies have given attractive schemes wherein person can have access to internet at very negligible cost. This resulted into easy access to porn sites.
2) Public Display of Affection When we visit parks , lake side , sea shore etc. there is lot of PDA and couples are not showing any inhibitions in showing their feelings for each other.
3) Sex is not a taboo anymore Unlike before sex has become rampant and pre-marital sex is not a taboo anymore. It is harsh reality which we have to digest.
4) Skewed sex ratio The number of boys born are more than number of girls. ( The reason shall be subject of another article & we are not discussing here) However this situation leads to girl not being available as friend to everyone.
5) Lack of basic grounding Earlier boys were taught to respect woman. Lord Rama could not choose his brother Laxmana to bring back Sita from Lanka. The reason is Laxman looked at feet of his bhabhi only and never looked face to face. Can we implement this today ?
6) Staying alone away from family Many Men and Women are forced to go away from their families in search of employment. The prohibitive costs of houses and cost of living in cities force them to leave their families at native place.
7) Long legal process After rape if accused is to be punished there is long legal process and very humiliating for the victim. Many cases are dropped half way and accused is let scot free prompting him to 'try' once again.
The frequent incidences of rape have become embarassement for our country as a whole. Foreign media when report such incidences write " Yet another incidence of rape in India......." When we see this we really do not know as to where to hide our face.
The another recent thing which has started is rape and killing of minors. This is another shameful thing. The incidence at Kathua also shook the entire country and Government had to enact death penalty for rape of minors. One such verdict has been already given in case of accused from Indore was sentenced to death in 22 days of trial. This was very fast and right justice. We are now waiting to see as to how long will it take to hang this culprit.
While this law is applicable for minor victims same should be extended to adult victims as well. Another thing which Government should do is legalization of Prostituition.
While Government is doing its best within given framework we as citizens need to do following,
1) The accused should be tracked and our displeasure to be made known to him.
2) Meet his parents of accused and ask them to be more vigilent about their son.
3) While employing drivers , watchman , daily wage earners give preference to person who is staying with family.
4) When girl says "No" it is No. Stay away. This needs to be communicated clearly.
5) Create open atmosphere allowing girls to complain easily under adequate protected environment.
The social organizations within locality should adopt approach of " Chhedega to Pitega " We need to create scare among potential offenders as it would work for sure.
