World's Largest Democracy struggles to keep its borders intact.
India - World's Largest Democracy got Independence in 1947.
Right at the time of birth it had to give away 2 land pieces. One was West Pakistan and other East Pakistan.
The country is surrounded by 6 nations# Pakistan# China# Nepal# Bhutan# Bangladesh# Sri LankaThere always seems to be some or the other tension in these countries.Pakistan occupies a part of the Indian Territory in Kashmir region and they are enjoying the same for the last 55 years. They are even going a step further and claiming for the balance portion of Kashmir.In 1962 war China occupied some area of India called Aksai Chin.In recent history, China occupied a part of Arunachal Pradesh. There has been a conflict in the Dokhlam region. China has also invaded Indian Territory in Ladakh and India is yet to give befitting reply.Nepal, on the other hand, has been a friendly nation. They are dependent on India for products, services, education and medical treatment. They also get lot of revenue due to Indian tourists visiting the place. However, they too have changed the dynamic with India in recent times. They have claimed a part of the Indian Territory and even added it to their official map and new map adopted by their parliament.In case of Sri Lanka, India does not share a land border. But fishermen of both countries fight in sea over their respective territories.As such size of India / Hindustan was much higher 100 years back.The entire Pakistan and part of Afghanistan was included in the same If you see mythological references then Kailash Parbat, Pashupatinath, Lanka etc. were part of the same. Today, India has shrunk and shrinking further.India spends huge amount on its defense services. The defense budget is Rs 3 lac crores ($ 51.1 billion) India is among top 5 nations in the world when it comes to defense spending.They have 1.1 million strong Army. They buy all latest war weapons like bofors guns, Rafael fighters, aircraft carriers frigates, Lockheed Martin Helicopters; Apache attack choppers, SU 30 MKI Combat aircraft, and S-400 missiles, anti tank guided missiles and so on. Though unemployed youth is biggest issue for the country, the military spent has been increased by 54%. Countries like France, USA, Russia, and Israel have greatly benefited from India's shopping.Inspire of all this their borders are not intact and actual position is different than what is drawn on map.Another disturbing thing is that the Indian Soldier is killed every third day. This is huge price of human life which India is paying. This is happening without engaging into any war like situation.The year wise deaths of Indian soldiers are as follows 2005 - 342,2006 - 223,2007 - 221,2008 - 71,2009 - 107,2010 - 187,2011- 71,2012 - 75,2013 -64,2014 - 65,2015 -85,2016 - 86,2017 -354,2018 -457As can be seen from 2014 to 2018 number of soldiers getting killed has increased  7 times. The curve needs to be flattened and then lowered.The recent incidence of Galwan, Ladakh in which our soldiers were killed by stones and barbed wire brings shivers to my spine This has been done by country to which we give business in billion dollars. Numerous diplomats visit and also our PM make visits. Deals are signed to buy lot of stuff from them, contracts worth millions of $ are awarded and they invade our land and refuse to budge after agreeing in the meeting. If this dispute goes to UN then it would become another POK like situation wherein we will only show this area on map without having actual possession.It is not the case that there are no border disputes in other countries. There is history to each country wherein wars have been fought to claim territory or land mass.#East Germany and West Germany had built wall on their border.#US is planning wall on Mexico border.#South Korea and North Korea are constantly at loggerheads.#South Africa and Zimbabwe#Estonia/Latvia and Russia.#Czech Republic and Slovakia etc.Many of them have made peace with each other.However in case of India disputes with neighbors are not resolved amicably. The issue lingers on. So many bilateral meetings take place. There is SAARC in which they have meaningful dialogue. PMs of both countries visit each other. When present Indian PM was sworn in he invited heads of all neighboring states for swearing in ceremony. At that time it was felt that India's equation with neighboring countries will improve and peace will prevail. However it did not happen. In spite of longer ties with India these countries drifted towards China.The protection of border does not happen by force but by mutual understanding. Look at Europe, people are able to travel seamlessly from one country to another. US and Canada also have friendly ties and understanding. There are no disputes.Today world has become global village and it is stupid thing to fight over piece of land. People of India and China have migrated to other countries and are contributing to economy of these countries in their capacity as Professionals or Businessmen. Many Indians have also become political leaders in other countries.Since India is affected party in present situation it has to take lead and settle things with neighbors and guard borders without losing life of soldiers.Datt Udasdatt.udas63@gmail.com
