India has potential to come in top 5 defence equipment manufacturer
India has potential to come in top 5 defence equipment producers.
Hugging each other is age old tradition and prevalent in many countries. It shows affection to each other. Hugging can be just a simple hug or hug repeated on both sides of chest or touching both cheeks while hugging.
Hugs are gender neutral.
However these days this hug is proving to be costly. Indian Prime Minister hugs head of states and then buys defence equipment costing millions of dollars. It is not that heads of states always hug when they meet. Many times a handshake suffices and there are many camera flashes which glitter the event. Cameras also take close up of hand shake to know as to how fruitful the talks shall be.
Hugs without context and the correct level of familiarity can be construed as inappropriate.
In case of bilateral trade there is process of tendering by Indian defence forces who want to equip themselves with arms to protect countries borders and souverenity of state. This process is of national importance. When it comes to awarding contract to successfulbidder then timing is coincided with visit of Indian Premier and contract is signed as bilateral agreement. India has huge buying power and many countries are targeting India as a market to sell their products. These huge contracts help foreign countries to improve their bottom line, pay taxes to their Government and most importantly generate employment in their own country.
Indian defence budget this year is Rs 2, 95,511 crores. India is among world's top 5 spenders which include USA, China, Saudi Arabia, Russia and India. In fact this year due to hike in their budget to $ 51.1 billion India surpassed UK.
India inked 187 contracts worth Rs 2.40 lakh crores for military equipment in last 4 years. This figure is mind boggling and gives tremendous power to Indian personnel who decide such deals.
Such huge spendings have put India tight on funds and certain indigenous projects like construction of air craft carrier INS Vishal had to be differed. Cochin Shipyard has already made one aircraft carrier and design and supply chain for INS Vishal is also ready. They are waiting for green signal from Government and Government unable to give due to costly dollar imports.
Some of the major contracts which were signed with various countries are as follows,
1) Israel - Anti tank guided missiles -Rs 1850 crores
2) USA - Lockheed Martin Helicopter - $ 1.8 billion
3) Russia - S-400 missile - $ 5 billion
4) France - Rafale Fighter Jets - Undisclosed Sum
Further cabinet has recently cleared deals worth Rs 46,000 crores
There is deal for Minesweepers which is in pipeline. Minesweepers locate and destroy mines planted by enemy. The expected cost is Rs 32,640 crores. Companies in race are Kangnam Corporation, South Korea and Intermarine, Italy. You will very soon see hug with premier of one of these countries.
The question here is can we not win wars without any of these costly imported equipment? India made satellite at one third the cost of others and it was launched satisfactorily. Similarly they can also make defence equipment at less than half price. This would save precious foreign exchange. Today UAE is contemplating purchase of Tejas aircraft from HAL - Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. Aggressive marketing and push from head of state can see deal through.
Another approach is to play your cards well and avoid war altogether.
If we encourage Indian companies to make these equipment within India once supplied they can also capture export market and estimated value of business is Rs 1, 70,000 crores.
In such scenario foreign heads of state will come and buy from us and still give a hug !
