Is India Shipping It's Jobs Overseas ?

Is India shipping its jobs overseas?

In order to create jobs, it is imperative that there should be some business activity which needs human activity. Due to advent of technology, the activity can be done from any location. For example, one can provide software support to company in other countryfrom his own country. Similarly work of call centre can be done from anywhere in the world.

Similarly manufacture of goods can be undertaken anywhere and due to infrastructure available can cater to entire world. The only thing which needs to be done is to penetrate market overseas and sky is the limit.

All foreign companies consider India as big market. This country has huge population and spending power is increasing which results into good consumption of any item. Indian Government also has budget for various schemes and spends good amount of money every year.
Another peculiar thing about India is that goods required can be produced here only. We have technically skilled manpower and entrepreneurial ability people. We can make everything right from Steam Turbine to small nut and bolts. The local factories are dependent on local markets. Lot of investment has been done in starting these factories but today they are not able to use their full capacity. They do not get good orders as market is filled with lot of foreign goods. Foreign companies are encouraged to do business here. Today country like China supplies us all power equipment, steel items and even toys, shoes, purses and even Ganapati Idols.

This is true for Power Sector as well wherein lot many goods are imported from other countries though available in India. The table attached indicates that the items which are made in India are imported as well. The technical specification and parameters aresame. In fact, they are interchangeable. This means if you have any transmission line equipment erected on line which is of imported make and fails for some reason same can be replaced by Indian make. All dimensions and interlocking systems are standardized. The question is when there is idle capacity in country what is need for import?

The Central Power Utility has purchased huge quantum from overseas parties. When they were criticised, they have put condition in tender that 25% of items to be manufactured within India. As such India has capacity to manufacture 100% of items. Many foreign
companies who have taken contracts at unworkable prices are today defaulting on deliveries. Who is sufferer?

In addition to Power Equipment our Government has huge budget for Infrastructure like Water intake, roads, bridges, railway etc. Many foreign companies are taking contract from these. However, there is full capability within India to execute these.
Bullet train project has import of entire equipment. Even stones beneath the rail are imported from Japan. I remember famous Raj Kapoor song “Mera Juta hai Japani, pantaloon englishstani, sar pe lal topi moti par dil Hai Hindustani “
When our Government started campaign for “Make in India” it was felt that foreign investors will come here, erect factories, provide employment to lacs of people and business to ancillary units. However, this did not happen. Foreign companies used this opportunity to grab Indian market. This resulted into our jobs getting shipped overseas.

India is only country in the world wherein every item can be manufactured and every item can be sold. We are not dependent on any other country or any other economy. If proper opportunity is given to Indian Entrepreneurs then jobs will follow.

  1. Yes. Make in India is a great initiative on paper. Govt even announced that 50% of defence purchase will be from India. This was supposed to give boost to local industry.
However on the ground level, implementation of these policies is not very enthusiastic.
If the operating people continue to prefer Status Quo, no PM can bring in the change that everyone of us want.
